There’s no question that beautiful surroundings make dining experiences more memorable... Ever since Braden and Yasmin Wages opened the first Malai Kitchen in Uptown’s West Village 10 years ago, the wood pergolas on its patio have been a recognizable feature. Those and the bright orange patio furniture mark a restaurant that brews its own beers to drink with from-scratch Thai and Vietnamese cuisine.

The same pergolas (and signature orange) call out the newest location in the retail complex on Luther Lane, the fourth for Malai Kitchen. All locations have similar design elements, and each displays a custom artwork by local artist Michael Sutton. Photos taken by the Wages on their travels throughout Southeast Asia also figure prominently in each restaurant. Textured wood elements bring nature indoors, which perfectly suits the menu full of dishes made with locally-sourced, fresh ingredients.

Malai Kitchen is now open and selling Southeast Asian food at a second Dallas address, in Preston Center. The shop run by husband and wife Braden and Yasmin Wages is well known for its bánh mìs, drunken noodles and peanut-crusted trout. They also brew beer.

Congee at Malai Kitchen: Congee is a soul-satisfying bowl of warmth. The stewy rice soup, like Malai Kitchen’s here, is imbued with ginger, chicken brother, scallions, a jammy egg, and a savory Chinese doughnut. ... A steamy bowl of savory rice porridge can have myriad iterations and toppings. This one keeps it mostly classic. It arrives piping hot with curls of scallion. Eggs with jammy yolks bob on top like orbs of sunshine.

Though they’ve been a popular Thai-Vietnamese kitchen for more than a decade, not everyone knows that they also operate a nano brewery that utilizes ingredients found in their kitchen to create unique beers that pair perfectly with their cuisine. The Bia Hoi Vietnamese lager works with just about anything, but get adventurous with a Peach Tea Wheat or the Thai PA, a pale ale brewed with lemongrass, ginger, Makrut lime, galangal, turmeric, coriander, cilantro, and five different American hops.
